An initial focus of AlTo's conservation work is Sulawesi's endangered Maleo bird (Macrocephalon maleo), whose huge egges as the target of widespread poaching for sale as a luxury item (the eggs are not needed for substence).
Since August 2006, through the efforts of AlTo and its partners, all taking of eggs at the nesting ground at Taima, Sulawesi - one of the very best of only a few dozen Maleo nesting grounds remaining anywhere-has stopped, and teams of local people are guarding the area to ensure that Maleo can nest in peace. Their eggs will be allowed to hatch, and new Maleo chicks can grow up in their native habitat.
